Over recent years, more and more people have been choosing cruises for their summer holidays. The children are out of school, teachers have time off, and for many cruise regions this is the optimal time to visit.
Summer cruises fall into what is known as the "peak season" or "high season" and because of this, it’s always a good idea to book in advance.
There was a time when peak season was different depending on the weather either at home or in a particular cruise region. But because of the number of families cruising in the summer, these months have become peak-demand times everywhere. Booking early for summer cruises is always a good idea because some cruise lines have limits on the number of children they will book on a sailing and ships have only a certain number of cabins that will sleep three people or more. Some cruise lines may even offer better deals if you book a long time in advance.
Here are some examples of cruise regions that are in peak demand during the summer months:
· Alaska – June through August in Alaska is the time when the temperatures are the warmest and you are more likely to see a broader array of wildlife on shore excursions. The catch is that you may have to book as far ahead as a year since this is the optimal time for cruising to Alaska. You may have an easier time booking by looking for cruise lines that offer departures on a weekday rather than a weekend.
· The Caribbean – Caribbean cruises actually have three peak seasons, one of which falls between June and August. During this period, you will find more families cruising because the family programs are all running full-time.
· Hawaii – June through August mark one of the two peak periods for Hawaiian cruises as well, again because the kids are out of school. Because of this, during the rest of the year sailings are rather sporadic usually because the cruise lines are repositioning their ships. For example Carnival Cruise lines offers only two sailings from Honolulu in April and two in September.
· Northern Europe – June through August is the most beautiful time of year in Northern Europe. The Baltic Sea and the fjords have numerous ports with warm, often hot temperatures and sunny skies. This time of year is great for being outside aboard ship or on shore in Northern Europe. The rest of the year can be cold and often rainy, so booking summer cruises to the Baltic well advance is advised.
Knowing that the best sailings in the summer fill up fast, you should start planning for your summer cruise several months to a year in advance.
